Further Mathematics at The Pingle School

Course description

What will I learn on this course?

Opting for further mathematics means two A levels will be gained over the two years.

In year 12 students will cover core 1, 2 and 3, decision 1, and statistics 1 which are all described in the mathematics course section. Students will also study mechanics 1 which involves vectors, equilibrium of particles, motion in a straight line, Newton’s laws and linear momentum.

In year 13 students will cover core 4 to gain their A2 mathematics and 5 more modules in order to gain their second A level in further mathematics. There is also the option to gain just an AS in further mathematics. The remaining 5 modules, further maths 1 and 2, statistics 2, decision 2 and mechanics 2, all extend the level of understanding from the previous modules.

How will I be assessed?

Modular programmes have the advantage of being available at certain points in the study schedule.

Each module is assessed by a 90 minute exam which takes place in May/June of each year. It is possible to re-take modules to improve your grade at the end of A2. In addition, your progress is closely monitored by use of homework and revision tests during the course.

Entry requirements

This subject is considered difficult. For further maths you will need to have studied to a higher level. To continue from AS to A2 you will need to have gained at least grade E in your AS modules.
