HISTORY at Steyning Grammar School

Course description

In a globalized world in which power is shared disproportionately between countries and their peoples, studying modern History will help you to understand how governments in the 20th century have used and abused their power. The course will allow you to reflect on two completely different styles of government and appreciate how the competition between these two styles nearly led to the destruction of the planet. Against this back drop of the 'Cold War' there is an opportunity to look at how the British mass media and popular culture has thrived during later 20th century.

  • Unit 1: In this unit you will study a Russian History since 1881
  • Unit 2: This provides the opportunity for you to look at a shorter period of British History in depth

At A2 Level (year 2) you will study two further units:

  • Unit 3: This unit will focus on Superpower Relations, 1944-1990
  • Unit 4: The topic for this study will be The USA: From Reconstruction to Civil Rights, 1877-1981
