French & Spanish AS/A-Level at St Aloysius RC College

Course description

This is a post-GCSE course. As well as a coursebook texts , you will work on video and audio materials and a number of internet sources. All language work is firmly linked to contemporary issues and life in France/Spain and other French/ Spanish speaking countries.

There are chances to develop further authentic French/Spanish material with the help of our Language Assistants. At year 13 you will also watch and analyse one or two French/ Spanish feature films.

Course content

AS - Unit 1: Spoken Expression and Response in French/Spanish: (SPEAKING). Topic based conversation on:

  • Youth culture and concerns
  • Lifestyle: Health and fitness
  • The world around us: travel, tourism, environmental issues and the French /Spanish world
  • Education and employment.

Unit 2: Understanding and written Response in French / Spanish: ( Listening, Reading and Writing)

Comprehension recordings and texts based on authentic material on the same topics as above.

A2 - Unit 3: Understanding and Spoken Response in French / Spanish : ( SPEAKING)

A presentation and discussion of either a film , a book or a region of France / Spain or the French/Spanish–speaking world.

Unit 4: Research, Understanding and Written Response in French / Spanish: Listening, Reading and Writing)

Comprehension recordings and texts on A2 topics ( environmental issues, social and political issues); the paper includes o short translation from English into French/Spanish and a research which must be related to the four research-based essay topic areas for this unit.

Entry requirements

You need to have at least a Grade B in GCSE French / Spanish ( the great majority of entrants have Grade B or better). These requirements are in addition to be a student within the Consortium.


AS - Unit 1: 30% of the total As marks and 15% of the total GCE marks

Unit 2: 70% of the total As marks and 35% of the total GCE marks

A2 : Unit 3: 35% of the total A2 marks and 17.5% of the total GCE marks

Unit 4: 65% of the total A2 marks and 32.5 % of the total GCE marks

(AS) students are required to get at least a grade D in order to start A2

No Coursework or Controlled Assessment

Examination 100% . All students will be assessed by Edexcel

Future opportunities

Students progress to a wide variety of destinations. Typically 30% take a degree involving languages, often combining French/ Spanish with another subject such as law, Business, tourism. Students going on to employment or training progress into areas such as retail and leisure and tourism. Overall the knowledge of a European language increases your career prospects, whatever you choose to specialise in.
