Sport BTEC Level 3 Diploma at Haverstock School

Course description

These BTEC qualifications in Sport have been designed to build on learning from Key Stage 4 or other level 2 qualifications, for those who may wish to explore a vocational route at level 3. They provide a suitable foundation for further study within the sector through to progression on to qualifications such as the BTEC Higher Nationals in Sport or related areas.

Entry requirements

6 GCSEs Grade A* to C or equivalent (including 3 from English, Maths, Science and PE).  Or a Merit grade on BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport. Evidence of specific sustained interest and motivation in sport. Ability to cope with a programme of physical activity.


The styles of assessment are a real strength of the programme, with the emphasis on coursework rather than exams, allowing students to achieve their full potential. There are a diverse range of methods used including written assignments, group work, presentations, practical tests and simulations.

Future opportunities

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport Performance, Coaching and Fitness provides a natural route into higher education for courses such as Foundation Degrees and Honours Degrees in sport related disciplines. This progression will inevitably depend on your performance, the course allows you to obtain 420 UCAS points (equivalent to 3 A*s at A Level). There are also opportunities to progress into employment in areas such as sports coaching, sports development, leisure centre management, health promotion, coaching and instructing of specialist groups, e.g. stroke patients, as well as using transferable skills for other careers such as the uniformed services.
