Work Skills Level 2 Diploma at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College*

Course description

This course offers an overview of skills that are essential for the workplace.

Course content

There are 23 units on the course, including:

  • Working in a team
  • Managing your own money
  • Applying for a job and interview skills
  • Preparing for a work placement
  • Learning from a work placement
  • Planning and running an enterprise activity
  • Building relationships with colleagues and customers.

The majority of the units are linked together and are practically assessed through role plays.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement for the course is 2 GCSEs at grade 3 (grade D) in either Maths or English Language. If you have previously studied at the College, you will need a pass in E3/level 1 Functional Skills Maths or English and to have successfully have passed your main vocational subject.

Material fees of £126 need to be paid in September. This will go towards, an SGS L2 polo t-shirt, a stationary set, the Mojo Active trip, printing/paper costs.

Assessment

The course is assessed on a coursework basis throughout the year. Each unit has one final piece of coursework submitted by a specific deadline. The lecturer gives clear feedback on how you can improve and what you have achieved. One resubmission is allowed for any piece of coursework. The course is graded Pass/Fail.

Future opportunities

In order to progress within our Business & Travel Department, you will require a positive reference from your tutor, must successfully pass the Level 2 Workskills course and achieve a level 1/2 pass in Functional Skills Maths/English or GCSE grade 4 (grade C). Providing you meet the above criteria, you will be guaranteed an interview with one of the following internal courses:

  • BTEC L2 Certificate in Business
  • BTEC L3 Diploma in Business
  • City and Guilds L2 Travel
  • BTEC L3 Diploma in Travel
  • BTEC L2 Diploma in IT.

On successful completion of the course and with a positive reference from your tutor, you will be guaranteed an interview with Brightside Insurance Company in Aust, with a possibility to join their customer service team as an apprentice for 18 months. This is an exclusive offer to Level 2 Workskills students.

If you are successful at interview, Brightside will offer you:

  • Starting salary of £14,000 (rising to £16,000 after training)
  • Industry accredited training in financial services
  • Progression opportunities after 1 year in customer service to go into marketing, IT, HR, etc.

If you do not think you are quite ready for employment but you do not want to stay in full-time education either, then maybe an apprenticeship would be the ideal opportunity for you. There are many intermediate and higher apprenticeships available in business, customer service and hospitality that we can help you apply for.
