Chemistry at North Somerset Enterprise and Technology College

Course description

Chemistry is the study of all chemical substances and how they interact with each other. If you want to know what the world around you is made of, the food you eat, the clothes you wear, the gadgets you use, the natural and built environments around you, then chemistry could be for you.

In addition Chemistry will provide you with transferable skills such as developing your active, enquiring mind through experimentation, observation, interpretation and analysis, logical thinking and working through processes, problem solving and laboratory work.

Course content

Year 1 units include:

  • Particles
  • Composition of the nucleus
  • Isotopes and the use of mass spectrometer
  • An introduction to organic chemistry
  • Extraction of metals
  • Enthalpy and Hess’s law.

Year 2 units include:

  • Acids and bases
  • Polymers
  • Thermodynamics
  • Periodicity
  • Redox equilibria and properties of transition metals.

In addition to the principles of chemistry you will also look at how it relates to areas of real life, in manufacturing and industrial processes.

Throughout the course there will be a strong emphasis on practical learning, in the laboratory, using the latest technologies, and there will be opportunities to apply your learning in real life briefs provided by our partners.

Entry requirements

You will need 5 A*-C GCSEs, including a grade B in Maths and BB in Science GCSEs.

Future opportunities

Chemistry will link well with many of the other subjects you can study at NSETC from other A Levels such as Mathematics and other Sciences of BTECs such as Medical Science or Health and Social Care.

You could go onto university to study a wide range of degree courses in areas such as Medicine, Veterinary Science, Pharmacology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry and Environmental Science.

You could have a starting point in careers in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Forensic Science, and Chemical Engineering, the Food Industry, Nursing, Radiography, Pharmacy and Research.
