Art and Design at Calday Grange Grammar School
A level Art is a popular and demanding course at Calday. The specialist team of staff are committed to providing the best experience for all students who undertake this intensive course. The focus of the course is the creative and intellectual development of each student, building upon his or her strengths and interests. We aim to nurture individuality and creative thought through skills based workshops and Art historical appreciation from a wide range of styles and genres.
Unit 1 Coursework – Portfolio Unit Students must submit a portfolio which contains a project. This project will build confidence in drawing/painting and fine art skills. It will focus on teaching independent thinking and research skills. A Project A Project is a clearly defined selection of practical coursework, demonstrating evidence of the working processes involved and addressing all four assessment objectives. It will provide evidence of research, the development of ideas, making skills and critical/contextual understanding. It will be based on an idea, theme, issue or concept and include preparatory studies leading to a finished piece or pieces. Unit 2 Examination – 5 hours Question papers will be set by the exam board. These will consist of a choice of five questions to be used as starting points. Students will have 8 weeks preparation time and a 5 hour exam.
A*/A/B grades in an Art based GCSE are required for entry on to the course. A passion and enjoyment for Art at the highest level is required as well as a commitment to spending study periods and a great deal of extra time on their studio practice as well as timetabled lessons. Students should be aware of both historical & contemporary developments in the Art world & be actively visiting galleries and museums.
