A Level French & Spanish at Sawtry Village Academy

Course description

This excellent course provides the opportunity to build upon the skills learnt at GCSE Level (listening, reading, speaking and writing). You will develop your linguistic skills alongside your understanding of the culture and society of countries where French and Spanish are spoken.

The course is structured so that, in addition to learning the language, you will be engaged with the world around you and key aspects of modern life. You will develop the ability to form and voice your opinions in a foreign language.


The course includes a focus on technological and social change, looking at diversity and the benefits it brings. You will study highlights of French and Spanish-speaking countries’ artistic cultures, including music and cinema, and learn about political engagement and power in the French and Spanish-speaking worlds.


You will also explore the influence of the past on present-day French and Spanish-speaking communities.


You will study texts and films and have the opportunity to carry out independent research on an area of your choice.


The course comprises a speaking exam, a writing exam and a combined listening, reading and writing exam.

Entry requirements

An average points score of 46+, a grade B or above in the subject chosen and at least grade C in GCSE English and maths.

Language is the key to career and educational opportunities, because it enables people to exchange information and converse to build relationships and share cultures. Language qualifications are a valuable skill to have; they are thought to increase your salary by as much as 20 per cent. Furthermore, it will make you more competitive at interviews and for promotion.


Studying a language at A level can be the catalyst for many careers – teaching, translation, tourism and international organisations in areas such as finance, science, aeronautics and ICT.
