Trees and Timber Apprenticeship (Arborist) - Level 2 or 3 at Askham Bryan College

Course description

Work-based learning and assessment at your place of work with some college-based study. Learners must be in a paid work placement to commence an apprenticeship programme, and would usually enter at the Level 2 Apprenticeship stage before progressing to the Level 3.

Course content

Course Themes:

• Woodchipper operations

• Tree identification

• Tree climbing and aerial rescue

• Mobile elevated work platforms

• Maintenance of chainsaws

• Cross cutting with chainsaws

• Aerial tree pruning

• Small tree felling

• Pollution incidents

• Prepare a safe working site

• Chainsaw from rope and harness

• Health and Safety

• English and maths

• Plan, deliver and evaluate environmental projects

• Produce management plans for environmental sites

• Carry out surveys and communicate findings  

Actual course themes studied will be dependent on level. 

Entry requirements

Level 2 Apprenticeship: Level 1 Maths and English equivalent to GCSE grade 2 (old GCSE grade E) or above, plus suitable and relevant employment and will be expected to work towards Level 2 Maths and English where this has not been achieved.

Level 3 Apprenticeship: Usually a Level 2 work-based qualification (Intermediate Apprenticeship) or considerable work experience, plus suitable employment. Applicants must be capable of achieving, or have achieved, Level 2 Maths and English.

 

Assessment

A mix between assessment at your place of work and some study at the College.

A Level 3 course such as the Diplomain Forestry and Arboriculture or a Degree in a related subject.
