Plumbing Intermediate Apprenticeship at Boston College
This Apprenticeship allows you to gain industry standards skills in either plumbing and heating on domestic heating. You will be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the necessary skills and the knowledge required to be assessed against the national
Those who successful complete this qualification will be able to progress on to a Level 3 qualification.
As an Apprentice you will receive on the job training at your workplace and also attend day release training at Boston College.
You will study several elements which have been identified by employers as the skill required to be a successful Plumber.
These elements are:
Maths - Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills, unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved.
English - Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills, unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved.
ICT - Level 1 or Level 2 is a requirement of some Apprenticeships unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved.
ERR - Employee Rights and Responsibilities, which includes health and safety, equality and diversity as well as employment legislation.
PLTS - Personal Learning and Thinking Skills, which includes team working, creative thinking and reflective learning.
*Vocational Element (Competence) - all Apprenticeships include on-the-job training and assessment leading to a competence based vocational qualification.
The qualification you will study within your Apprenticeship framework is Diploma in Plumbing and Heating Level 2. During this qualification you will study a variety of units such as:
- Understand how to communicate with others within building services engineering
- Understand how to apply scientific principles within mechanical engineering services
- Understand and carry out site preparation, and pipework fabrication techniques for domestic plumbing and heating systems
- Understand and apply domestic central heating systems installation and maintenance techniques
- Install and maintain domestic heating systems
- Understand and apply domestic rainwater system installation and maintenance techniques
- Apply safe working practices in building services engineering working environment
- Install and maintain domestic plumbing and heating systems
Plus there are a number of optional units that can be tailored to fit to your employers needs.
Whilst attending College you will study in both the classroom and workshop with lecturers who have worked in the Plumbing and Construction industry.
3 GCSEs at grades C or above (New GCSE grade - 4 or above) including English, Maths and Science (or equivalent).
Assessments are through the completion of practical activities, written assessments, multi-choice examinations and gathering of work-based evidence.
Unit based assessments are scheduled throughout the course. All work is assessed when required by the College-based assessors and can be re-assessed if required without delay.
To achieve the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plumbing and Heating, you must achieve 10 mandatory knowledge units. You are also required to demonstrate the ability to perform the necessary skills and knowledge required to be assessed against the National Occupational Standards.
You will need to provide your own stationery, writing materials and a course text book.
Successful completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship (level 2) allows you to apply for an Advanced Apprenticeship in Plumbing and Heating.
Successful completion of the Advanced level could see opportunities to progress your career into such roles as Technician Project Manager or promotion within your current employment.
You can also progress in to employment from completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship.
