Fine Art at Hazel Grove High School

Course description

The A level Art course encourages students to continue exploring and investigating the subject. They build upon skills and techniques that they learnt at GCSE and learnt how to use new exciting media. Students are required to become much more independent and the course allows for more choice with greater emphasis on personal response than at GCSE. The influence of artists, designers and other secondary sources are expected to feature increasingly in the development of work and a strong commitment to the subject is important in order to gain fully from the course. For each unit of work students will be given a theme and encouraged to develop work that interests and inspires them, every unit will have an element of freedom. Throughout the course you may have the opportunity to participate in exciting activities such as visits to galleries, drawing and photography days based outside of the classroom and school setting, life drawing, and exhibiting work in local galleries and exhibitions.

Entry requirements

In the main, entry depends on the attitudes and aspirations of the prospective Sixth Formers. All students should be able to demonstrate willingness to progress and a desire to do well. You must show a commitment to making the best use of opportunities available and an ability to succeed with the course you choose. In general, if you wish to study an Advanced Level course you will need a minimum of 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above including Maths and English. A minimum of a B GCSE grade must be achieved in a subject if you want to study it for A level. Many subjects can be studied at A Level with a B grade in a similar subject, if the student has not studied that subject at GCSE. See individual subject details.
