Drama and Theatre Studies A Level at Chadwell Heath Academy

Course description

This qualification is linear. Linear means that students undertake all non-exam assessment (NEA) in the certification year and sit the written exam at the end of the course. We currently plan to enter students for the AS examination in Year 12 in addition to the full A Level.

Course content

Modules for AS
Component 1: Drama and theatre (written exam)
- Knowledge and understanding of drama and theatre
- Study of one set play
- Analysis and evaluation of the work of live theatre makers

Component 2: Process and performance (practical)
- Practical exploration and theatrical interpretation of two extracts (Extract 1 and 2) each taken from a different play
- Methodology of a prescribed practitioner must be applied to Extract 2
- Extract 2 is to be performed as a final assessed piece (students may contribute as performer, designer or director) • Portfolio evidencing interpretive process and analysis and evaluation of performance

Modules for A-Level
Component 1: Drama and theatre (written exam)
- Knowledge and understanding of drama and theatre
- Study of two set plays, one chosen from List A, one chosen from List B
- Analysis and evaluation of the work of live theatre makers

Component 2: Creating original drama (practical)
- Process of creating devised drama
- Performance of devised drama (students may contribute as performer, designer or director)
- Devised piece must be influenced by the work and methodologies of one prescribed practitioner

Component 3: Making theatre (practical)
- Practical exploration and interpretation of three extracts (Extract 1, 2 and 3) each taken from a different play
- Methodology of a prescribed practitioner must be applied to Extract 3
- Extract 3 is to be performed as a final assessed piece to an external examiner (students may contribute as performer, designer or director)
- Reflective report analysing and evaluating theatrical interpretation of all three extracts

Component 1: Drama and Theatre
Written Paper – 3 hours (40%)

Component 2: Creating Original Drama
Practical Coursework (30%)

Component 3: Making Theatre
Practical Coursework (30%)

Future opportunities

Further study in Drama, Theatre Studies and Performing Arts in Higher Education at degree or HND level. Can lead to a career in the creative or performing arts industries.
