A Level Drama and Theatre Studies at Hasmonean High School

Course description

In this Drama & Theatre Studies course you will gain a deeper understanding of how theatre works and you will have opportunities to be a performer, a designer and an active audience member. In all these areas you will gain skills and understanding that will prove to be valuable and rewarding in the future.

The qualification is designed to enable students to acquire a knowledge and understanding of the language of drama and theatre, as well as to develop their performing and analytical skills. This course combines the activities of exploring plays, creating theatre, the performing of plays, the analysis of theatre and the critical evaluation of all of these elements. Students completing the course successfully will have a thorough understanding of drama and theatre, highly toned analytical and creative skills and an ability to communicate effectively with others.

Entry requirements

These are flexible but generally, a good pass in GCSE Drama and English is desirable. However, if Drama has not been taken at GCSE then an aptitude test in acting will be required.


There are two units in this AS course.

In Unit 1: Exploration of Drama & Theatre, you work practically on two plays chosen by your teacher and complete a set of notes covering both texts. You must also see at least one live theatre performance and complete a written evaluation of it.

• worth 40% of your AS mark.
• is internally assessed (marked by your teachers) and externally moderated.

In Unit 2: Theatre Text in Performance, there are two sections. The first section requires you to offer either a monologue or duologue, or a design skill in support of performer(s). The second section requires you to contribute to a performance of a professionally published play, either as a performer or designer.

• worth 60% of your AS mark
• divided into two sections, A and B, which are equally weighted.
• externally assessed by a visiting examiner.
