Hospitality and Catering - Higher Diploma at Queensbury School

Course description

Diplomas are different to existing qualifications; they offer young people a fully rounded education, which combines theoretical and practical learning.This is an exciting opportunity to participate in a brand new course that involves a range of Hospitality and Catering skills, including food preparation, cooking and food service. It will give you the knowledge and skills that you will need for college, university or work in an exciting, creative and enjoyable way.

Course content

Learners studying for the Higher Diploma in Hospitality and Catering Studies must achieve, the principal learning qualification, a project qualification, functional skills in English, ICT and Mathematics and any relevant combination of qualifications from additional and specialist learning that equals or exceeds 180 guided learning hours.
The principal learning in the Diploma in Hospitality and Catering Studies is made up from 8 units, all are mandatory. They are as follows;

  • Exploring the Hospitality Industry
  • Working in a Hospitality Team
  • Communication Skills in Hospitality
  • Customer Service Standards in Hospitality
  • Working Safely in Hospitality
  • Dealing with Costs and Income in Hospitality
  • Providing a Hospitality Service
  • Food Preparation and Cooking

How will the student be taught?

The Diploma is a great new way of combining class work with hands on experience.This new qualification allows lots of opportunity to come into contact with people who are employed in this industry. Students will learn how to work with other people and express themselves confidently in a work environment by developing personal, learning and thinking skills.

How will the student know s/he is achieving?

One to one reviews of learning, reporting structure that happens once a term, written feedback in portfolio and coursework, feedback during practical sessions, feedback from employers and other partners engaged in the delivery.


How is the Diploma assessed?

  • Through a practical demonstrationsPractical Test
  • A written examination

The Diploma is graded A*/A/B/C

What can the student expect to achieve?

The level 2 qualification is equivalent to 7 GCSEs at A* - C

Will there be any cost to the student?

Students will be expected to provide basic equipment, such as pens, pencils, paper. They will be expected to find some of their own resources for their practical sessions and portfolios. There may be a requirement to pay some travel costs if going out to employers' premises for work experience opportunities.

What can the student expect to progress on to?

The qualification will provide opportunities for progression onto the next Diploma level, general qualifications and further education.

Is the course recognised by employers, can it lead to employment?

It offers progression opportunities for future employment within the Hospitality and Catering sectors and related industries. This new course has been developed with the relevant employers and People 1st(the Skills Sector Council for Hospitality & Tourism)
