International Baccalaureate - Visual Arts at St Mary Magdelene Academy

Course description

This course is studied as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme. The study of visual arts offers a unique opportunity for you to develop your creative practice. You will be able to work in a variety of specialist areas including, 3D Design and Fine Art Painting, Drawing, Sculpture and Cermamics as well as Digital Photography. You will record your research through sketchbook and journals, developing your ideas towards more ambitious final pieces. You will also make visits to exhibitions, galleries and professional studios and engage with practicing artists. In addition you will develop aesthetic appreciation and engage in philosophical debate. You will explore three main areas: visual language, where you will develop skills working in different art, design and craft areas; themes and Ideas, where you will develop your own ideas and interests looking at possibilities in art, design and craft contexts and social, cultural and other contextual references, where you will explore the global influences and experiences that affect your own work and that of other artists, crafts people and designers.
