Music Technology A Level at Carisbrooke College

Course description

Are you interested in sound? Would you like to learn how to operate a mixing desk? Would you like to be the one in the ‘hot seat’ when bands are recording in a studio? Have you got a musical imagination for taking a tune and re-arranging it? If you can answer ‘yes’ to the above questions, then Music Technology is the subject for you.

Course content

During the course you will learn to operate industry standard sequencing software. You will also use the same level of recording equipment, microphones and FX processors that are used in professional recording studios. Students will be faced with similar challenges that modern sound engineers and record producers face and will receive the training to tackle them. You will also study how technology has developed and impacted the music industry from the early 20th century to the modern era. You will also learn how music technology has developed in the 20th and 21st centuries, by listening and analysis. Units include MIDI sequencing and audio recording using Logic Pro, Composition and arranging techniques, and the history and development of popular music.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements into the VI Form are a minimum of 5 A*-C Grades (or equivalent Level P9 - P5 English & Mathematics) at GCSE for A levels/Level 3 courses.

Most subjects have specific entry requirements, which can be found below. If you do not meet these requirements, an interview will be necessary with the subject leader and parents or carers to determine your suitability for the course and a trial period may be agreed: C - Music or Merit at BTEC .

Future opportunities

Successful students will have gained a range of theoretical, creative and technological skills appropriate for further education or employment in the music industry. This could include sound artists/composers, sound engineers/ producers in community music and education settings. They will also be appropriate for a variety of other settings, including the interactive media sector, where project management as well as creativity and discipline are important.
