Applied Science- Medical Science Level 3 at North Hykeham Joint Sixth form

Course description

The full two year course is made up of 6 units of work. In Y12 three compulsory units (units 1,2 and 4) are delivered (in common with the forensic course) and these cover the fundamental science and skills needed for biology, chemistry and physics as well as some work on lab design, health and safety and scientific communication. Currently all units are divided into assignments which require you to produce a range of evidence including written worksheets, research reports, photo evidence, videos and animations. These then form the sole basis of the level of award (pass, merit or distinction) you will receive. In Y13 the centre has a choice of units it can deliver with the emphasis on specialist aspects of medical science – currently this includes units (11, 12 and 43) on human body systems, human regulation & reproduction and disease & infection.

This course would be suitable for anyone who would like to continue with science to a higher level but would like a course which develops a balanced science knowledge and then uses this knowledge in specialist medical/biological context. Being 100% portfolio based (currently) means there are no exams and work can be repeat submitted if improvements can be made.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 2 GCSE’s at Grade C in science or at least a merit from a level 2 BTEC or equivalent.
