Engineering BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at Seevic College

Course description

If you are interested in a career in Engineering as a Technician, or plan to go on to university or a higher level Apprenticeship, then this vocational course would be an ideal choice. 

This practical course will see you develop both hands-on skills and academic knowledge of Engineering.

You will study subjects such as mathematics for engineering, modern engineering materials, health and safety, engineering design as well as build practical skills like machining techniques and welding.

Additional extracurricular Engineering activities will also give you the chance to show off your creativity.

Course content

There are six mandatory units and additional units which make up the credits for the course.

The mandatory units are:

  • Health and safety in the engineered workplace
  • Engineering Project
  • Mechanical principles and applications
  • Mathematics for Engineering Technicians
  • Mechanical Principles and Applications
  • Electrical and Electronic Principles

The additional units may include*:

  • Unit 10 Properties and applications of engineering materials      
  • Unit 21 Engineering secondary and finishing techniques        
  • Unit 22 Fabrication processes and technology 
  • Unit 23 Welding technology

Entry requirements

General Entry Requirements

  • Five GCSEs (minimum) Grade C/4 or above including English Language or Maths. If your English Language is a D/3, your Maths must be at least a C/4 and vice versa.

OR

  • A Level 2 BTEC Diploma or above and GCSE English Language or Maths at grade C/4 or above.

Specific Entry Requirements

  • Grade C/4 or above in GCSE English Language
  • Grade C/5 or above in GCSE Maths.

Assessment

Teaching is a mixture of classroom based theory and practical work; you’ll learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.

All of the work will be assessed through coursework. This is set and marked by your tutor. Marks accumulated over the year will be added together, giving you an overall grade upon completion.

Financial information

Equipment Costs – All students on this program will need Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).  Although we can provide PPE for students to borrow we also offer the opportunity to purchase your own overalls and steel toe capped boots at reasonable prices.

You will also need to purchase a small selection of basic drawing equipment, a scientific calculator and general stationary supplies.

Future opportunities

The great thing about this course is that it will give you a choice of opportunities once you've completed it. 

  • You could decide to go on to study a degree in a wide range of Engineering disciplines, or you could take an HNC/HND in Engineering
  • You could progress to a Higher Level Apprenticeship in a variety of different Engineering companies, as many of our students do.
  • You could go directly into employment in a variety of Engineering disciplines, such as a Technician or Technician Engineer.

Further information

You will have the opportunity to engage in a large and exciting design and build exercise. Previous projects have included a jet powered canoe, go-carts and various multimedia entertainment centres alongside a small but beautifully designed water feature for a local company and a fully recyclable wind turbine for a shed roof.
