Childrens Play, Learning and Development BTEC National Subsidiary Certificate at Farnham College

Course description

This course prepares you to work unsupervised or in a supervisory capacity, with children in a variety of settings. It also prepares you for degree level study.

You should want to work with children or young people and enjoy communicating with children of all ages and working closely with their families.

The course is demanding and you will need good organisational skills and be able to work to deadlines.



Course content

Topics include

  • development
  • health and safety
  • equality and inclusion
  • nutrition
  • caring for sick children
  • working with babies and
  • communication.

You will spend two days each week in placement and some block periods.

Your practical skills will be assessed by experienced professionals in your placements, forming part of the overall assessment of the course.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE at grade C including English and maths, plus a clear Disclosure and Barring Check (DBS).


Examination, assignments, portfolios, case studies and a piece of research work.

The Level 3 National Diploma prepares you to work unsupervised, or in a supervisory capacity, with children and their families in a variety of settings and environments within the sector of Child Services.

Also, it prepares you to move on to a higher education degree in a related area, including Early Childhood Foundation Degrees.
