Art and Design Diploma Level 1 at New College Stamford

Course description

"Develop your drawing, print making and design skills whilst working on a variety of projects throughout the year, finishing with your own Final Project, which you will develop and manage independently. You will explore using different media and techniques including drawing, painting, print making, spatial design and model making.This course is 100% coursework based."

Course content

There are no formal exams as part of the this course. Your coursework will make up a diverse and can use for future interviews. You will complete a number of projects throughout the year, each gradually building your skills and structured with detailed weekly step-by-step plans, notes and reviewing your own work to support your creative development.

Entry requirements

No formal qualifications are required, but please bring your own artwork to your interview to demonstrate your artistic strengths.


Asssesment is completed through a portfolio of evidence which will be internally assessed. You can utilise your porfolio to take to University or job interviews to showcase your abilities. Your projects will be assessed as you complete them, and you will receive detailed feedback and a set of targets as to where you need to develop your skills as you begin the next project. This structure will help you steadily improve your art and design skills and arrive at the final project with a far greater level of self-confidence. You will complete sketchbooks which require a balance of 50% notes and 50% artwork. It is crucial that you fully reason your research, ideas and final pieces and the questions I set you on your briefing sheets will support you in this process.

On successful completion of this course you can progress on to Art and Design Diploma Level 2

Further information

Although no formal work experience is required you are encouraged to take up opportunities to develop your professional knowledge through placements and competitions. Where possible, we will utilise local and distant trips to support your studies. This may well require additional costs to cover the transport, but we will give you plenty of warning as to when trips will be coming up. Throughout the year, the college has a host of visiting groups and lecturers giving talks, a timetable of these events will be on the wall in the studio at the start of term.
