General Studies A level at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School

Course description

This is a modular course with 3 modules taken at AS, and 3 modules taken at A2. All these modules address thinking and analytical skills. It is these skills which encompass the course.

You will develop:

  • An understanding of the nature of knowledge and truth.
  • An appreciation of the similarities and differences between different kinds of knowledge.
  • An ability to analyse data, ideas, arguments and opinion.
  • The ability to evaluate, make judgements and present arguments.
  • The ability to use logic.

Course content

AS level modules:

Module 1:

Culture, Morality, Arts.

Module 2: 

Science, Mathematics, Technology.

Module 3:

Society, Politics and Economy.

A2 Level Modules

At A2, the skills already addressed are developed. There is a foreign language section in one paper, and a synoptic module, that is tested using pre-released material.

Module 4: 

Culture, Morality, Arts and Humanities. Plus - French, Spanish or German comprehension.

Module 5:

Science, Mathematics, Technology.

Module 6:

Society, Politics and Economy, (Synoptic - tested by analysis of pre-released material).


No Coursework.
