Level 3 Access to Higher Education – Physical Science & Engineering at Henley College Coventry

Course description

This course is for learners who are 18 and over.

The Access to Higher Education course prepares you to study at university and is also widely recognised by employers. It is designed for those who have left school without the usual qualifications  such as A Levels.

The hours of study consist of 12 mandatory class contact hours per week.  You will also need to commit to self-study outside of class times.

You will study a range of modules that will make up 45 credits covering:

  • Physics,
  • Chemistry and Mathematics :Electricity
  • Thermal Properties and Heat Transfer
  • Atomic Structure
  • Chemical Elements and Reactions
  • Algebraic Methods
  • Calculus
  • Graphical Methods

In addition to the 45 credits a further 15 credits will be gained from skills for learning which includes preparing for a written assignment, preparing for a higher education admission interview and progressing to higher education.

You will be assessed via a range of methods including essays, reports, presentations, projects and examinations.

Upon successful completion of the course, you can progress to university to study subjects such as Civil and Electrical Engineering, Podiatry Chemistry, Physics and Biology.

Entry requirements

You need to show you have sufficient skills in English and maths, which means satisfying one of the following requirements: GCSE English grade C, level 2 or equivalent
GCSE Maths grade C, level 2 or equivalent
If the above criteria cannot be met  you will be asked to complete a screening test at interview to determine the appropriate level.
You will also need to attend an Access interview, at which you  should be able to discuss entry requirements for courses you would like to apply to after the Access course.
