Course description

The Spanish A level course aim to:

  • Develop students ability to use the language effectively in a variety of contexts and genres.
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of Spanish-speaking countries.
  • Enable students to develop and build on the skills acquired at GCSE.
  • Provide students with a sound basis for further study.
  • Provide enjoyment and intellectual stimulation.

What will I learn on this course?

Full A level course

Students will study eight topics in two years. All four topics of year 12: family and relationships, media, popular culture and healthy living. Followed by the four topics in year 13: Environment, multicultural society, contemporary social issues and a cultural topic. 

AS level course

Students will study fours topics in two years. The two topics of year 12: family and relationships, media. Followed by two topics in year 13: popular culture and healthy living.

You will also learn:

  • How to effectively develop and build on the skills acquired at GCSE.
  • Students will develop use of vocabulary and grammar.
  • Students will learn more about the rich culture of a specific language-speaking country.

How is the course structured?

The course is divided into the four key skill areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Listening and reading skills are examined at the end of the course, contributing 70% at AS, 35% of the A level. (110 Marks) Speaking skills are examined at the end of the course, contributing 70% at AS, 15% of the A level. (50 Marks) 

Entry requirements

A GCSE grade B or above is required to study Spanish at Birmingham Ormiston Academy.
