Art and Design UAL Advanced Diploma at Derby College

Course description

The Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Art and Design has been designed to provide you with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to progress to degree level study in art and design, or into employment.  It provides an opportunity for those who have an interest in the visual arts to explore, develop and test their creativity within a qualification structure which is stimulating and demanding and provides a supportive transition from further to higher education.

Course content

The course is generally delivered over one year and will enable you to develop a practical portfolio of work that could support progression into a range of higher education courses or employment.

While on the course you will have the opportunity to develop your critical and contextual awareness of different perspectives and approaches within art, design or related subjects of study or work. In addition you will research, analyse and evaluate relevant information and ideas in order to develop practical creative solutions.

In addition to improving your practical and theoretical knowledge, you will have the opportunity to develop your English and maths skills. Candidates without GCSE Maths at grade C or above will re-take this qualification or study Functional Skills. There is also the option to access further GCSE English to improve your grades and enhance your life skills and future career progression chances.

Entry requirements

Applicants should be highly motivated and demonstrate a keen interest in the creative arts.

You will need:

  •  a minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language and an art and design-related subject.
  • the Intermediate Diploma in Art and Design to a Merit or Distinction standard, including English Language at grade C or above.

If you are a mature learner, we may be able to take your previous experience in art and design into consideration.  All applicants will be interviewed, will undertake an initial assessment in English and maths, and must present a portfolio of current work.

Assessment

Assessment of practical and written work occurs regularly throughout the course.  The outcome of the course is graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Any additional English and maths study undertaken will be assessed through a controlled final exam.
