Advanced Apprenticeship - Level 3 Diploma Hairdressing or Barbering at County Training - Shropshire Council
This course provides an introduction of working within a salon environment and prepares candidates to progress onto an Apprenticeship.
Advanced apprentices take their learning a step further by developing their cutting and colouring skills so they can carry out all the latest fashion techniques – and maybe even determine the fashion looks of the future.
The Barbering course will teach you all about the cutting and styling of men and boys hair, learning how to give client consultations, cut hair, trim and shape facial hair and shampoo and condition hair and scalp.
These courses are work-based qualifications, so you will be learning through on-the-job practical training, providing you with the relevant skills and experience in order to continually progress your career.

Examination and Practical Assessment
Before your course starts you will meet with your manager at work and your assessor to discuss which units of the qualification you will be working towards. These will be based on the kind of job role and day-to-day tasks you will be doing. Your assessor will then visit you on a regular basis to help collect evidence of the skills and knowledge you are gaining through one-to-one discussions, observations at work and witness testimonies from your manager – all of these activities will help you to build a portfolio demonstrating your ability for this area of work.
The cost will be dependent on individual circumstances. There may be funding available to cover training costs.
For 16-18 year olds undertaking an Apprenticeship, training will be fully funded. A contribution of £250/£350 may be required for individuals aged 19 and over depending on existing qualifications held.
Hair stylists need to keep up to date with new trends, so there are always opportunities for further training or the chance to specialise in a certain area e.g. colouring.
If you want to progress to a higher level you could do a foundation degree in hairdressing and salon management and even move on to complete a BA (Hons) in this subject area.
Often qualified hairdressers and barbers take the leap into setting up their own business and take up management training. Others train to become assessors and tutors – there are plenty of exciting paths for those serious about a career in the hairdressing and barbering industry.
Any person currently undertaking a Level 3 Apprenticeship is entitled to access a programme of 6 management courses free!
