Skills for Independence and Work at Southampton City College

Course description

If so look no further as City Horizons can offer you a range of alternative options. Our courses are ideal if you didn’t pass your English and maths qualifications and need an opportunity to continue your studies.

We are offering multi-skilled courses designed to assist, empower and support successful progression onto a suitable Level 1 or level 2 course, an apprenticeship or into employment.

All students without an A*-C grade in English or Maths will be required to complete a functional Skills qualification in both maths and English alongside a work based vocational course.

Our courses offer taster sessions in a range of subject areas such as;

  • Hairdressing and Beauty
  • Hospitality
  • Construction
  • Motor Vehicle 
  • Engineering
  • Early years

Course content

You will study maths and English at Entry level 1 and 2, alongside team building, practical skills, cooking, sport, animal care, leisure and money.

Entry requirements

A GCSE qualification is not required for this course. On arrival you will complete an initial assessment to check what level you are working at.

Future opportunities

On completion of this qualification you can progress on to a work based vocational course.
