  2. Challenges for the individual in society

Course content

How will you learn?

The programme is timetabled for one double period a week and is taught in tutor groups. You will have two teachers, one for each module. Learning will involve a mix of taught lessons, individual research, group discussions, presentations by students and lectures by outside speakers.

Entry requirements

Students coming into Year 12 will take AS Level General Studies or the Extended Project Qualification as part of their curriculum enrichment programme. Those who want to may continue General Studies to A2 in Year 13.

Examination Board: Edexcel

What exams and coursework are involved?

There is no coursework. At AS level both modules will have a 1½ hour examination that includes essay style questions, multiple choice and source analysis.

Future opportunities

Because of the nature of the teaching and learning in this subject – the specification is much too broad to learn absolutely everything and you have to use your knowledge, skills and understanding to interpret and evaluate information - achievement at AS and A Level General Studies is considered by many Universities as a clear indicator of likely success at degree level in a wide range of subjects. What is more, although some Universities do not include General Studies in their initial offer, a good grade in General Studies is often a significant factor for admissions tutors choosing between two candidates with the same main subject profile. It frequently swings their decision if students have not met their offer grades.
