Childcare and Education Cache Diploma at New College Pontefract

Course description

Completing the CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator) qualification will show that you have been trained to the highest of standards, equipping you with the best early years training available. This qualification is for all those wanting to work with children from birth to five years of age, in a variety of settings including, schools, hospitals, nurseries and with children who have special needs. The CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator) enables you to enter the workforce as Early Years Educators or access Higher Education.

Each student is required to complete 750 work placement hours, in a variety of different early years settings and with a variety of different age ranges. Students must be willing to travel to their work placements.

This two year course is equivalent to 3 A-Levels.

Course content

A range of coursework based modules including: child development from conception to seven years, children’s health and well-being, providing safe environments for children, child health, play and learning, understanding children’s additional needs, observation assessment and planning, supporting emergent literacy, supporting emergent mathematics, preparing for school readiness.

Entry requirements

Level 4 in English Language and Level 3 in Maths.

Clear Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, performed by the College. Each successful candidate will have to pass an internal assessment before a place will be offered.


1. Submission of assignments against the grading criteria of the qualification.

2. One short answer test which will be based on a case study. (You will be given the case study in advance to prepare for the short test.)

3. Completion of placement hours.


Future opportunities

Upon achievement of this qualification it is intended that learners will be able to access higher education or enter the workforce as Early Years Educators. This qualification confers the licence to practice as an Early Years Educator.

How much private study should I expect to do?
A minimum of 2 hours per week.


What materials will I need to purchase?
A text book and a New College uniform for work placement. There will be £100 course fee.

What is the exam board?
CACHE (Council for Awards in Care, Health and Education, the leading specialist Awarding Organisation for the Care and Education Sector).


This subject is for you if…

you want to pursue a career in early years education; you enjoy learning outside of the classroom (in a work experience setting); you prefer coursework to exams; you are hard working, organised and can manage your time effectively.

This subject is not for you if…
you do not enjoy a ‘hands on’ approach to learning, as you will be learning in a practical setting for approximately 50% of the qualification; you do not enjoy working with children.
