IT Certificate Level 3 at St Cuthbert Mayne School

Course description

This qualification is designed for learners who want to continue their education through applied learning by developing their knowledge and understanding of the principles of IT and global information systems.  IT is one of the most popular vocational qualifications offered by OCR and is awarded the same amount of UCAS points as the conventional A Levels.  Achievement of this qualification can support progression to go on and study relevant IT degrees in a Higher Education institution such as, Computing and IT, Computing Science, Software Developments, Software Engineering, ICT and Computer Networks or Business Information Systems.

Entry requirements

5 A* - C Grades, including Grade 9 – 4 English and Mathematics
GCSE English Language & Literature A* - C


  • Supports progression to go on and study degrees
  • Includes 2 practical units – learn, do, review
  • Develops transferable skills for the workplace or future studies

Over 2 years you will need to complete 5 units of work of which the first 3 units are mandatory.

Fundamentals of IT

  • Global Information
  • Cyber Security

The other 2 units are project based coursework that involves a product, such as website being develop.  These 2 units are internally assessed by your teacher in school and then moderated by the Examination Board.

Future opportunities

Since this course carries UCAS points it is an excellent course for students wishing to prepare themselves for Further and Higher Education.  The practical knowledge, skills and understanding you learn in this course are especially relevant for employment where employers can immediately benefit from this industry-relevant, vocationally geared and stimulating course.
