Hair, beauty and holistics - Hair and Media Make-up Level 2 Diploma at Kirklees College, Huddersfield Centre

Course description

This qualification has been specifically designed to enable you to learn both aspects of hairdressing and media make-up. It will provide you with the skills and techniques to enable you to provide services to a high level of occupational ability. Students work collaboratively with media and performing arts departments, TV studios, fashion, media, external events, and with the close proximity of lead practitioners many students gain professional work skills in industry, which can boost assessment opportunities and broaden communication, styling and creative skills.

Course content

Course content includes the opportunity to understand and experience a variety of techniques used in the world of media make-up through a creative and challenging curriculum and excellent facilities

Mandatory units;
Follow health and safety practice in the salon
Client care and communication in beauty-related industries
Apply make-up
The art of photography make-up
The art of dressing hair
Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector

Additional units

Colour hair using temporary colour
Provide eyelash and brow treatments
Body art design
Design and apply Mendhi skin decoration
Themed face painting
Apply skin tanning techniques
Nail art application

Plaiting and twisting hair

Entry requirements

GCSE English grade 3 and maths grade 2 or above 


A minimum of 3 GCSEs grade D or above to include Maths and English. You will be required to bring a portfolio of make-up work or artwork to your interview.


The course will be assessed using a variety of methods including the following:

Evidence of prior learning

Depending on their experience and confidence within a sector and interview this qualification provides suitable progression opportunities to the Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical Special Effects Hair and Media Make-up and then the HND in Theatrical, Media & Special Effects Make-up
