Health and Social Care Apprenticeship Level 2 at Bedford College

Course description

This Level 2 Apprenticeship in Health & Social Care will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to care for others in a wide range of health and social care settings. The course is flexible to suit all fields of health and social care, so you can choose a pathway that suits your role. For example, you may be working with people with a learning disability, people with dementia, or with children and young people. Completion of this course will provide you with the main qualification required by the Quality Care Commission in England and the Care Councils in Wales and Northern Ireland, and will therefore enable you to improve your future job prospects and career progression.

Entry requirements

To begin this course you will need to be working a minimum of thirty hours a week in a health and social care setting. You will also need at least three GCSEs at grade D or above, including English and Maths. Entry will also be subject to tests and interviews to determine your capability to achieve the course at this level, and whether you have the commitment expected in order to achieve the final qualification.

Examples of desirable skills and attributes in potential apprentices include:

  • Motivation to succeed within the sector
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • Respect for people who use the services as individuals.

Potential apprentices should also have a suitable level of fitness, and the ability to perform the more physical aspects of the job roles. These may, for example, involve assisting in the moving and handling of people. Potential apprentices should also be willing to undergo an enhanced CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check.

Assessment

Assignment is an ongoing process and you will be required to complete a portfolio of work evidence. You will also be assessed in the workplace.

Future opportunities

On completion of this course you could progress from this pathway onto further qualifications specific to your working environment. This could include the Health & Social Care Apprenticeship Level 3, the Clinical Health Care Apprenticeship Level 3, or other work-related education and training to support your career development.
