Biology A Level at Accrington and Rossendale College

Course description

Science is a huge industry… and you can be part of it! If you’ve a keen interest in biology and wanting to study it when you leave school, you’re one step closer to careers such as microbiologist, nature conservation officer, pharmacologist, research scientist, soil scientist, health promotion specialist, medical professional, vet, dentist or biology teacher. The subjects you learn about will be invaluable at a personal level and will also open up a whole number of career options. Students will have the chance to use some of the department’s excellent facilities, including our new Science Laboratories, where much of your practical lab sessions will take place. You’ll also take field trips off campus which will allow you to gain additional skills, for example trips to Manchester Museum, local breweries, rivers, caves and universities.

Course content

You’ll study topics including disease, living organisms, investigative and practical skills and population and environment.

Entry requirements

As part of a Full A Level Programme – 4 x A*-B grades at GCSE including science/biology. Students must have a minimum of a C grade in Maths and English.

As Part of a BTEC Options Programme – 5 x A-C grades at GCSE including Maths and English and B in Science.


You’ll be assessed by way of written examination for AS and A2.
