Animal Management BTEC Level 3 at Lancaster and Morecambe College

Course description

This course will provide you with a knowledge base for a range of careers in the animal management industry. It will provide specialised studies relevant to individual vocations and professions within the industry and help you develop a range of skills and techniques essential for successful performance in working life.

Course content

The course will require you to attend College four days a week. You will study the following units in year one of the programme: • Animal Biology* • Animal Welfare and Ethics* • Practical Animal Husbandry • Animal Behaviour • Animal Health and Diseases • Animal and Communication • Work Experience in the Animal Sector • Exotic Animal Husbandry In year two of the programme you will study the following units: • Animal Breeding and Genetics* • Investigative Research Project • Practical Skills in Animal Science • Animal Metabolism • Advanced Animal Nutrition • Aquatic Animal Health and Husbandry • Zoological Animal Health & Husbandry • Wildlife Ecology & Conservation Management *= Externally set assessment and externally marked by Pearson.

A work placement has to be completed as a mandatory part of the course; the placement may involve access to animals from the categories of: • Large animals • Companion animals • Rodents • Exotics species The placement will be completed as a block during the academic year. 


Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English and maths OR a Level 2 related qualification. Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager


This course is continuously assessed using a range of methods including structured project work, assignments and observation of practical work. There may be some short tests. Three of the units will be externally set and marked by Pearson, one of which is a formal written exam.

Financial information

You will be required to pay £55.00 for visit costs. You will also need suitable clothing and footwear for working outdoors with animals.

The course provides progression to: • HNC/HND Animal Behaviour & Welfare at LMC • Foundation Degree in Animal Management • Other Level 4 qualifications • Level 3 NVQs in Animal Welfare and Management, Pet Care and Supply and Animal Training

What qualification will I get?

On completion of one year programme you will receive a Foundation Diploma in Animal Management. If you then go on to complete the second year of the programme you will receive an Extended Diploma in Animal Management. 

You will be expected to undertake regular home study on this programme.
