Science and Engineering apt awards Access to HE Diploma Level 3 (W) at Falmouth Marine School

Course description

Access courses are designed as a stepping stone to enable motivated, enthusiastic people to progress on to Higher Education. This is ideal for those who want to re-train or re-direct their lives into marine science, sustainable construction, nursing, chemistry, and many other science related university courses. There is a very high level of academic and personal support throughout the course, which can help if you need to combine study with part-time employment and family commitments.

Course content

You will study core skills units including: Research Skills, ICT and Academic Writing.

The modules studied will be Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) Statistics, Geometry, Project Planning and presentation, Environmental Pollution and Web Design plus others. The Level 3 course consists of 20 modules in total.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to attend an Access Taster where full course information is given and you will be expected to complete the Initial Assessment and a written exercise. 

All applicants need to successfully complete Level 2 English and Level 1 Maths Initial Assessments. You will then be invited in on a separate date, usually two weeks later, for a one to one interview for approximately 1/2 hour.


Attendance at the College is required three days per week for one year. Assessment is principally by assignment, although there are also timed tests and at least one extended piece of coursework.

You will be developing key academic competencies to underpin your undergraduate journey in your chosen profession.  You will be expected to attend 100% of the modular sessions and develop excellent communication skills through class based discussions, group work, objective and analytical written work and presentations demonstrating a high level of autonomy in your approach to your studies.

Future opportunities

A science-based Access course is a suitable entrance qualification for the many science based degrees in Cornwall and throughout the country. It is also a recognised qualification that can help you gain entry into the workplace. At Falmouth Marine School the pathways you can undertake are
