A2 Further Mathematics at Phoenix Academy
Further Mathematics Further Mathematics broadens your study of Mathematics by allowing you the opportunity to study more Applied Mathematics, as well as furthering and deepening your knowledge of Pure Mathematics. It is an excellent foundation if you are intending to study Mathematics at university or a Mathematics related course such as engineering. Many universities will accept students onto a Mathematics degree course with two high grades in Mathematics and Further Mathematics at A2 and a weaker third A2 grade. The A2 Further Mathematics course consists of a further three equally weighted modules. FP2 ‘Further Methods for Advanced Mathematics’ is the Pure module and this includes matrices, complex numbers, polar co-ordinates and calculus. Two Applied Modules from Mechanics, Statistics or Decision Mathematics (those not being covered in A2 Mathematics) complete the three modules required. For A2, one module will be taken in January of Year 13 and the other two modules in June of that year.
The first reason for studying AS Further Mathematics must be an enjoyment of the subject. You must also be studying AS Mathematics with the intention of taking this on to A2 and have gained either an A or A* in your GCSE.
