Combined Science Trilogy GCSE at Thomas Rotherham College (TRC)

Course description

It is essential to have a GCSE science qualification for teaching and nursing and for anyone wishing to study Science at A Level. 



Course content

Biology: Cell biology, health of and control in the human body, respiration, photosynthesis, ecology and an introduction to genes and evolution.

Chemistry: Atomic structure, bonding, chemical reactions, chemical analysis and chemistry of the atmosphere.

Physics: Energy, electricity, forces, waves and magnetism.

Annual visit to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.


Entry requirements

At least 1 x D/3 in a GCSE Science subject (or a Distinction in BTEC Level 2 Science).

At least Grade 2 in GCSE Maths.


There are six external exams (available in higher or foundation tiers). Each counts for 16.67% of your overall grade and each is 1 hour 15 minutes long (2 x Biology, 2 x Chemistry, 2 x Physics).

Your qualification will be graded on a 17 point scale: 1-1 to 9-9 where 9-9 is the best grade.

There are 21 required practical activities that have to be undertaken in class and there is also a new emphasis on the mathematical requirement of the course.

Future opportunities

With further training, you could go into a job related to science such as a Teacher, Pharmacist or Science Technician .

    • The College is situated on Moorgate in Rotherham, about a 15 minute walk from the centre of Rotherham.  Buses leave the central Rotherham Interchange every 10 minutes and the journey takes approx. 5 minutes. 

      We also run dedicated bus services to ease your journey to and from College.  See for details and route information. 

      The College also has on-site permit parking for students, with priority given to students with the greatest distance to travel.
