Mathematics and Further Mathematics A Level at Tytherington School
AS/A Level Mathematics is chosen by a wide range of students, from those intending to read the subject at university to those needing particular techniques to support other subjects or their chosen careers. At Tytherington School we are able to make Mathematics more accessible to our students by offering courses within the guidelines of 'Mathematics in Education and Industry' (MEI).
Further Mathematics will be taught concurrently with A Level Mathematics. If you are considering a degree in Mathematics or related subjects (Physics, Engineering) you will find that an increasing number of universities are now expecting knowledge beyond A2 Level. You would therefore be wise to consider Further Mathematics should you wish to pursue a Mathematics based career.
We believe that students should learn an approach to Mathematics that will equip them to use it in the adult world and be able to communicate what they are doing to those around them.
The course encourages students to:
- Develop their understanding of Mathematics in a way that promotes confidence and fosters enjoyment
- Develop abilities to reason logically
- Extend their range of skills and techniques and use them in difficult, unstructured situations
- Develop an understanding of coherence, progression and connections
- Recognise how a ‘real world’ situation may be modelled mathematically
- Use Mathematics as an effective means of communication
For Mathematics and Further Mathematics a Grade A at GCSE. Students with Grade B will be considered for Mathematics.
All components are assessed by examinations taken in the Summer of Year 12 and Year 13. The Mathematics department will determine which combination of units will be assessed within the rubric of the specification.
Three components are required for an AS grade whilst six are required for A Level FOR BOTH Mathematics and Further Mathematics
The requirements of the module ‘Core Mathematics 3’ include a single piece of coursework, which is worth 20% of the marks of the unit.
The coursework covers particular skills or topics that are, by their nature, unsuitable for assessment within a timed examination but are nonetheless important aspects of the module.
The work undertaken in coursework is thus of a different kind from that experienced in examinations.
Mathematics will develop abilities to help you reason logically. You will find that many of the mathematical skills encountered will assist you when modelling ‘real life’ situations.
