Vocational Studies (Early Years) BTEC Level 1 Extended Certificate at Newcastle-under-Lyme College
The course aims to equip learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding to begin to work with young children. You will also gain a qualification to enable you to progress onto a Level 2 programme or an Apprenticeship. It will also help learners develop personal skills, which can be used later in all forms of employment. The course also focuses on improving learners’ skills in Maths and English. This is a one year, full-time course.The units you will study include communication skills with children, planning for the physical and emotional care needs of children, creative activities for young children, keeping children safe, encouraging children to eat healthily.You will also continue to improve your maths and English skills in structured lessons alongside your course and where appropriate you will take further qualifications in these subjects. If you plan to progress to a Level 2 course you will need to demonstrate a satisfactory level of improvement in English and maths by the end of the year.
Ideally you will need one GCSE at grade D or an Entry Level 3 Vocational Diploma and aged between 16 and 23 years old.
You must pass all the units to gain this diploma. To pass each unit you will produce a portfolio of evidence including a range of written assignment work, presentations, project work, group work and practical-based assessments.
Newcastle Maintenance Allowance (NMA): Anyone with a household income under £21,000 can receive £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances.
