Animal Care Diploma Level 1 at Boston College

Course description

This course is aimed at anyone who is interested in Animal Care. You will complete both practical and theory based units such as animal handling, animal accommodation and feeding and watering animals.

Course content

During your time on the course you will undertake theory and practical units including: 

- Safe and Effective Working Practices in Land-based Industries 
- Assist with Maintaining the Health and Wellbeing of Animals 
- Assist with Watering and Feeding Animals 
- Assist with the Preparation and Maintenance of Animal Accommodation 
- Assist with the Handling and Restraint of Animals 

The practical units will be run in our new animal care unit at the College. 

In addition to your course, you will also study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade. 

Educational trips are planned throughout the year, alongside guest speakers.

Entry requirements

2 GCSEs at grades E or above (New GCSE grade - 2 or above) or equivalent, or Entry 3 qualification, Certification in Skills for Working Life or Life Skills, or ESOL Entry Level 3. 

If you are unable to meet the above entry qualifications, an alternative course would be the Small Animal Care and Horticulture RSW Diploma Level 1.


This course is 40% practical and 60% theory. You will be assessed be group work, course work and presentations.

Additional costs may include approx. £20 for trips and approx. £20 for equipment.

Future opportunities

Successfully completion of the course can lead on to progression onto the Animal Care Diploma Level 2 or employment.
