Applied Science A Level at Little Heath School

Course description

Science is the foundation of our understanding of the world we live in. The Applied Science A Level course will deepen your understanding of the real science used daily in a wide variety of businesses and organisations.Through various technical activities, you will develop your practical skills, often using more advanced equipment and chemicals not usually used lower down the school.

This focus on real laboratory work is backed up with coursework tasks set in realistic work situations.This all means that Applied Science gives you an interesting, flexible and useful vocational qualification with many transferable skills.

Course content

AS Level:

Unit 1: Science at work - when does science fit into organisations? How are organisations affected by health and safety regulations?

Unit 2: Analysis at work - How do scientists analyse substances chemical and physically? What affect does efficiency have on the way that tests are carried out?

Unit 3: Monitoring the activity of the human body - Uses and methods of physiological measurements? Ethical issues surrounding monitoring diagnosis and treatment of patients.

A2 Level:

Unit 1: The mind and the brain - How does memory work? How can the brain be analysed?

Unit 2: Working waves - Properties of waves. How different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum are used.

Unit 3: Investigating the scientists' work - How does the size and speed of a meteor affect crater size? How do scientists use this to assess the impact zone?

Entry requirements

To gain the foundation needed to succeed on this course, you need a good set of GCSE results as the course can be quite demanding, including at least at C in Mathematics and English. Candidates with lower GCSE scores could take the course and will be given additional support, particularly in the coursework modules. Ideally if you have an interest in Applied Science AS level then you should be aiming for at least a C grade in GCSE Additional Science.


At both AS and A2, two units will be assessed through coursework and one by examination. Each unit has equal weighting.
