Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles Intermediate Subsidiary Diploma at Derby College

Course description

This Level 2 course is for those wishing to specialise in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair for a career in the motor industry. It is designed for school and college leavers who have already achieved the Level 1 Motor Vehicle Maintenance qualification but who still need to achieve grade C in BOTH Maths and English.

Learners will further develop their skills in maths and English alongside the Motor Vehicle qualification, which will support their main programme of study, help their future progression and enhance their life skills.

Course content

You will study:

  • Health and Safety
  • Tools, Equipment and Materials
  • Routine Light Vehicle Maintenance
  • Engine Systems and Components
  • Chassis Systems and Components
  • Inspecting Light Vehicles Using Prescribed Methods
  • M2 Maths unit
  • English (Functional Skills or GCSE resit)
  • Maths (Functional Skills or GCSE resit)
  • A minimum of five days work experience in a motor vehicle environment

Entry requirements

You must have previously completed and achieved a full Level 1 Motor Vehicle qualification but still need to achieve a grade C in either Maths or English.

The opportunity to achieve the full Level 2 Diploma is possible through a top-up course from Week 32 if you are predicted to achieve C grades in both Maths and English during the June exams.

Assessment

Underpinning knowledge will be assessed via online external tests and assignments for all units.  Practical activities are assessed in our centre using externally set criteria.  Maths and English will be assessed through a final exam in both Functional Skills and GCSE.

Future opportunities

Subject to achieving the Level 2 Subsidiary Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair and the required Maths and English grades, there is the opportunity to achieve the full Level 2 Diploma (VRQ) through a top-up course from Week 32 to 37 if you are predicted to achieve C grades in both Maths and English during the June GCSE exams.

If you secure employment, you can also progress to the Intermediate Apprenticeship Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Competence (VCQ).
