Catering and Hospitality Intermediate Apprenticeship at Boston College

Course description

Apprentices will train in a number of hospitality services roles including: front of house reception, silver service waiters, kitchen assistants, and chefs. 

You will learn how to offer a variety of cuisines for a range of kitchens and restaurants. You will study Hospitality Services, Food and Beverage Service, Kitchen Services and Professional Cookery.

Course content

The Apprenticeship framework consists of several elements which have been identified by employers as the skills you need if you want to find work in the Catering and Hospitality industry. 

These elements are: 
Maths - Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills, unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved. 

English - Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills, unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved. 

ICT - Level 1 or Level 2 is a requirement of some Apprenticeships unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved. 

ERR - Employee Rights and Responsibilities, which includes health and safety, equality and diversity as well as employment legislation. 

PLTS - Personal Learning and Thinking Skills, which includes team working, creative thinking and reflective learning. 

*Vocational Element (Knowledge) - most Apprenticeship frameworks include off-the-job study for a technical certificate which is usually done at College. 

*Vocational Element (Competence) - all Apprenticeships include on-the-job training and assessment leading to a competence based vocational qualification. 

*On some frameworks, the knowledge and competence elements are combined into one qualification. 

The qualifications you will study within your Apprenticeship framework are as followed: 

Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hospitality Services, or, Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Food and Beverage Service, or, Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Kitchen Services, or Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Professional Cookery. 

Technical Certificate: Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality and Catering Principles (Hospitality Services), or Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality and Catering Principles (Food and Beverage Service), or, Level 2 Diploma in Kitchen Services, or Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality and Catering Principles (Professional Cookery).

Entry requirements

2 GCSEs at grades C or above (New GCSE grade - 4 or above) and 3 GCSEs at grades D or above (New GCSE grade - 3 or above) including English and Maths (or equivalent). 

Future opportunities

If you are up for the challenge and are ready to learn, successful completion of this course could enhance employment opportunities and gain you a widely recognised qualification. 

Intermediate apprentices, with support and opportunities within the workplace, can progress onto: 

- The Advanced Apprenticeship in Catering and Hospitality 
- Other advanced apprenticeships particularly where customer service is an important part of the job such as business administration, retail and travel and tourism 

With additional training, intermediate apprentices may be able to progress in their careers to roles including supervisory positions with possible routes to eventual owner or manager of hospitality and catering businesses.
