Government and Politics at Carshalton High School for Girls

Course description

Politics students are encouraged to think independently and approach new subjects with an enquiring mind. They will develop their skills of analysis and problem solving. They will also build on their communication and oral skills. This means the course combines well with History, English and Sociology in particular.

Course content

Students who take this course will:
 
  • gain an insight into current affairs in politics.
  • develop a critical awareness of the nature of politics and the relationship between political ideas, institutions and processes 
  • gain an understanding of the structures of authority and power within the UK's political system and how these may differ from those of other political systems Develop the ability to express your own political ideas.
  • acquire the skills required to present an analytical argument with relevance and coherence.

Assessment

AS level

Unit 1 – People & Politics
Students will study democracy & participation in UK politics, political parties, elections & pressure groups.
 
Unit 2 - Governing the
Students will study the UK constitution, Parliament, the Judiciary, the Executive, recent constitutional reform including the impact of the European context.
A Level
Unit 3 - Representative Process in the USA
Students will study; Elections, Parties, Pressure Groups, and Racial Politics in the USA.
 
Unit 4 -Governing the USA
Students will study; The Constitution, Supreme Court, President, Congress in the USA.
