English Language at Calder High School

Course description

 Have you ever wondered why our spelling system is so difficult?

 Do you know how we learn to speak, read and write?

 Where do all our words come from?

 Can you write a magazine article for teenagers, a political speech for Gordon Brown or create a website for your favourite band?

 Do you like breaking things down and finding out how things work?

 Do you think men interrupt more often than women in conversation and want to find out why?

This course is suitable for students who wish to study English, English Language or Linguistics in Higher Education. It encourages students to develop their interest in the English Language, looking at the structures, functions, variations and development of the language.

There are also opportunities for students to develop as writers and produce texts for different audiences and purposes, experimenting with varied genres.

There are high expectations of each and every student. From the very start we expect you to show initiative and the desire to consolidate and explore further what you will learn in class with a fair amount of independent study.

Course content


Unit 1 Categorising texts: An introduction to language study and frameworks, including the social contexts of Gender, Power and Technology.

Assessed by a two hour examination

60% of AS marks, 30% of total A Level marks

Unit 2 Creating texts: Candidates are required to produce two pieces of original writing for specified audiences and purposes, plus commentaries.

Coursework: 2,500-3,500 words in total

40% of AS marks, 20% of total A Level marks


Unit 3 Developing Language: The study of child language acquisition and language change in English.

Assessed by a 2 hour and 30 minutes written examination

30% of total A Level marks

Unit 4 Investigating Language: Candidates are required to produce two pieces of work: a language investigation and a media text related to their investigation.

Coursework: 2,500-3,500 words in total

20% of total A Level marks

Entry requirements

At least grades C in GCSE English and English Literature, preferably B or above

A genuine interest in language

Future opportunities

A high status qualification which supports a wide range of university courses and careers. Of particular relevance to careers involving communication and investigation e.g. advertising, law, journalism and teaching.
