AS Level: English Language and Literature at King Edward VII Science and Sport College, Coalville

Course description

This course will be enable you to use integrated linguistic and literary approache in your reading and interpretation of texts.

You will also develop a creative engagement with set texts and study independently a wide range of spoken, written and multimodal texts; exploring the relationships between texts.

Independent and sustained studies are encouraged  to develop your skills as both producers and interpreters of language.

Entry requirements

5 A*-C grades including a grade C in English


At AS, candidates study language and literature using an anthology of literary and non-literary texts and a chosen set of paired texts. Further study focuses upon the ways in which different writers have approached similar subjects and the ways in which language and style are affected by change over time and contextual variation:

¨ Unit 1: Introduction to Language and Literature Study 40%

¨ Unit 2: Themes in Language and Literature 60%


Future opportunities

An English Literature qualification is regarded extremely highly as an entrance qualification for a wide range of university courses. This is a creative and academic subject, so it also combines well with humanities subjects (e.g. History, Politics,  or Law and arts subjects, such as Theatre Studies, American Studies. 

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in English Language and Literature, which could lead onto higher education in English Language or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to English Language and Literature such as a Teacher, Journalist, or Editor. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking.
