Engineering: Electrical/Mechanical - Mechatronics - Fast Track Level 3 Diploma (ENG1) at Barnsley College

Course description

If you enjoy designing and developing engineering solutions and wish to gain employment or progress to higher education specialising engineering then this course is for you!

This is a fast track course which has been specifically designed to allow you to complete a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering in one year. 

Successful completion of this course will give you the equivalent of two A Levels and allows you to gain UCAS points depending on the grades you achieve, for example, achieving a distinction*, distinction* grade is equal to 112 UCAS points (2017 tariff).

Course content

You will be involved in a number of different learning techniques including:  lectures, demonstrations, self-directed study, practical work, tutorials, and online activities. You will be involved in work related simulations to enable you to gain experience through realistic working environments.  Resources relating to your course will be accessible via the College VLE (Moodle). You will study a range of engineering related subjects including

  • Manufacturing systems technology
  • CNC machining
  • Electrical principles
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  • Maths and science

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade 4/C or above including English plus maths at grade 5 or above. Must be aged 17 years or over.

Financial information

Financial support

If your total annual household income is less than £35,000 you could be eligible for financial support through our Learner Support Fund to help with travel. You don’t have to pay this money back. Apply to the Learner Support Fund.

You can pick up a Learner Support Fund application form from Student Services on the ground floor at the Old Mill Lane campus.

Food and Essential Equipment

Guaranteed bursaries

If you are aged between 16 and 18 and currently living on your own and in receipt of income support, in care or leaving care, you could be eligible for a non-repayable bursary of up to £1,200 per year.*

FREE bus services!

We realise that getting to and from college might not be very easy for everyone so we have funded four free return bus services for our students. They go to and from the Old Mill Lane campus which is just a few minutes’ walk from our Sixth Form college campus.

Stocksbridge via Penistone > Old Mill Lane campus

South Elmsall via South Kirkby, Hemsworth, Kinsley, Fitzwilliam and Ryhill > Old Mill Lane campus

Rotherham via Kimberworth, Ecclesfield and Chapeltown > Old Mill Lane campus

These bus routes are completely free for our students and operate on a first come, first served basis. Each route operates to ensure students get to college before lessons start and a return service is provided after lessons finish.
