English Language GCSE Retake at Shooters Hill Sixth Form College
The course is for all students who may not have obtained the GCSE C Grade that many Universities and employers demand. It is therefore aimed at those students who have left school without this qualification and can usually be combined with GNVQ and BTEC courses.
GCSE English Language at Grade C and above is an almost mandatory requirement for any further college or university course. In addition, employers view it as evidence of the reading and writing skills that any potentially successful employee should have.
Your final Grade is made up of 40% Controlled Assessment (four assignments), 20% Speaking and Listening Coursework and 40% final exam taken in June.
Throughout the year you will complete the four controlled assessments in class under exam conditions.
Speaking and Listening (20%)
You will be encouraged to join in with class discussions and group work as well as role play, reading of texts and debates. These activities are important as they count towards your final result.
Controlled Assessment (40%)
You are required to complete four pieces of written work – each has its own deadline to help you plan your work. You will build up your controlled assessment folder over the autumn and spring terms. Controlled Assessments are different to Coursework Tasks that you may have been familiar with. You will be given plenty of time to prepare and plan your response. However, the final piece of writing will be completed under exam conditions in class.
External Exam (40%)
Lasting 2 hours, plus 15 minutes reading time This will consist of a Reading section and a Writing section. You will be expected to respond to non-fiction texts and demonstrate your written skills (spelling, grammar and vocabulary).
Prospective students should have obtained a Grade D in GCSE English Language, as well as fulfilling normal Campus requirements for their main programme of study. Although some exceptions might be made to this requirement, students should recognise that it is difficult to progress two grades, from an E to a C, in just over two terms. It is an intensive course and you should be prepared to work hard, whatever your entry level.
