Film Studies AS/A-Level at Highams Park School

Course description

The AS/A2 Film Studies course will enable you to develop your understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of Cinema and Film. At AS we will start by Exploring Film Form. We will look at key scenes from selected Films. You will analyse film in terms of genre, style, cinematography, and performance and use these skills to create an analytical essay. You will then learn about the distinctive features of British and American Film. This unit features on Genre and storytelling. We will visit a Film Studio. You will also be given the opportunity to storyboard or develop a screenplay as a piece of coursework. At A2 we will study a variety of World cinema and particularly the effect of films on spectators and how they create emotional responses. You will produce or plan a short film. You will be given the opportunity to research and write about one film that you have researched in detail. You will learn by: Discussion / debate Presentations Small group work briefs and tasks Independent research Tutorials in editing or filming Objective and critical viewing of texts, for example films

Entry requirements

You will need the Standard college requirements for entry. The course suits those with a genuine interest in film and the film industry and who will enjoy watching a wide range of cinema from different periods. You will also need to discuss your responses to films in class and in written work. Assessment is both exam and coursework based.

The breadth, depth and diversity of Film Studies will complement a range of Higher Education courses and may be of value to those seeking employment within the TV and Film Industry, Publishing, Advertising and other areas of the Media.Film Studies links particularly well with other Arts/creative subjects such as Media Studies, English Literature and Language, Art and Design and Theatre Studies. The breadth of the course means that it complements many other subjects including, History, Business Studies, Sociology and Psychology.
