BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport at Altrincham College

Course description

This 14 unit course extends and deepens the specialist work-related focus from the GCSE PE. There is potential for the qualification to prepare students directly for employment and it is suitable for those who wish to enter a particular specialist area of work or university.


Course content

The 10 Mandatory units are; Anatomy and Physiology, Fitness Training and Programming for Health Sport and Well Being, Development and Provision of Sport, Professional Development in the Sports Industry, Research Methods in Sport, Sports Leadership, Practical Sports Performance, Coaching for Performance, Skills Aquisition in Sport, Investigating Business in Sport and the Active Leisure Industry

The optional units are:  Work Experience in Active Leisure, Rules, Regulations and officiating in Sport, Application of Fitness Testing, Principles and Practices for Outdoor and Adventurous Activities

The qualification is the equivalent of 3 A Levels.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grades A*- C including English Language, Maths and Science • BTEC Level 2 certificate in Sport at Merit level or GCSE Physical Education Grade B You will also be required to attend a practical assessment prior to the start of the course.


Assessment is through continuous ongoing written work, observation , practical performance and presentations that form assignments based on sports industy scenarios.

Future opportunities

Teaching PE, Coaching, Sports Centre Management, Leisure Services, Sports Development, Armed services and the Police.
