Physics A Level at Highfields School

Course description

This course will prepare you for a career or further study in physics, engineering, one of the other sciences or related areas. The course explores the fundamental concepts that make up the universe, developing and demonstrating them in real-world applications.

The staff in the department have experience of teaching a wide range of Physics concepts. The Department has prepared many students for successful application to study for higher level physical science, mathematical and engineering-based qualifications beyond our Sixth Form.

Course content

Following a content-led approach, the specification is divided into topics, each coveringdifferent key concepts of Physics. As you progressthrough the course you will build on yourknowledge of the laws of Physics, applying yourunderstanding to solve problems on topics rangingfrom sub-atomic particles to the entire universe.The Practical Endorsement will also support thedevelopment of your practical skills.

This course is split into six modules each focused on a different aspect of Physics. From an initial development of your skills, builkding upon your foundation knowledge and linking to our understanding of forces, motion, electricity, waves and fields, the course provides a snapshot of the most cutting-edge areas of Physics today. Alongside the content, you will develop your practical skills which will be assessed both within the examinations and separately endorsed, recognising the competence you have developed.

Entry requirements

5 A*- C GCSE grades (including a minimum of agrade C in GCSE English Language).At least grade B in GCSE Mathematics, Biology,Chemistry and Physics. Due to the fundamental importance of mathematical concepts within thePhysics course, all students must also be enrolledto study AS/A-Level Mathematics.

Physics is a highly numerate subject requiring communication in both numerical and written dormats. Additionally, you have to be well-organised, an effective time manager, able to focus and follow througha problem to its conclusion - key skills in whatever career or further study you ultimately pursue.

Assessment

All your work will be assessed by examination at the end of Year 13, with three examinations drawing upon the content from the six modules. These will reauire you to relate the concetps you have learnt and their applilcations to your practical work, demonstrating a thorough understanding of the subject.

Future opportunities

All the technology that surrounds us is badsed on the principles of Physics, so if you are considering working in any area related to technology from music to medicine, or lasers to law - studying Physics is an essential first step.

Students have gone on from this course to study at a range of institutions in a wide range of subjects including the physical sciences, Mathematics and Engineering.
